A long glass rod has a hemispherical end. A narrow beam of light is incident on the spherical end, the beam being parallel to the length of the rod. What is the position of the image formed if the refractive index of glass is 1.5 and the radius of curvature of the spherical surface is 10 cm ?

A

v = 30 cm in air

B

v = 20 cm in air

C

v = 30 cm in glass

D

v = 50 cm in glass

The correct Answer is:
C

The beam is parallel. `therefore u= -oo ` and R is +ve

`therefore " Using " (n_(2))/(v)-(n_(1))/(u)=(n_(2)-n_(1))/(R )`, we get
`(1.5)/(v)-(1)/((-oo)) =(1.5-1)/(10)=(1)/(20)`
`therefore (1.5)/(v)=(1)/(20) therefore v=30 cm`
`therefore` The image is formed at a distance of 30 cm from the pole in glass.
