The bob of a simple pendulum is a hollow...

The bob of a simple pendulum is a hollow cylinder, with a small hole in the bottom. It is filled with sand and set into oscillation. Its periodic time (T) is measured at regular intervals. As the sand starts coming out we find that

A

T increases with time

B

T does not change with time

C

T first decrases and then increases

D

T first increases and then decreases

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

As more and more sand particles come out, the centre of mass is shifted downwards and the effective length of the simple pendulum increases and as `T prop L` period increases. But afterwards it is shifted upwards and hence L decreases and T increases.

The time period of a simple pendulum, in the form of a hollow metallic sphere, is T. When it is filled with sand and mercury, then its time periods are T_(1) and T_(2) respectively. When it is partially filled with sand then its time period is T_(3) . The correct relation between T_(1), T_(2) & T_(3) will be

Assertion : The bob of a simple pendulum is a ball full of water, if a fine hole is made in the bottom of the ball, the time period first increases and then decreases. Reason : As water flows out of the bob the weight of bob decreases.
