A cyclotron is used to accelerate protons, deutrons, alpha-particles,etc. The maxumum kinetic energy acquired by the accelerated protons is E. What will be the maximum K,E, acquired by the alpha-partcles if they are accelarated under the same experimental conditions?

A

`E`

B

`E/2`

C

`4E`

D

`2E`

The correct Answer is:
A

The maximum K.E acquired by the ions in a cyclotron is given by `1/2mv^(2)max=(q^(2)B^(2)R^(2))/(2m)` For an `alpha` particle,q=2 xx charge on the proton=2e and mass `m_alpha=4`(mass of proton)`=4m_p` For the proton, maximum K.E`(e^(2)B^(2)R^(2))/(2m_p)=E` and for the `alpha` particle maximum K.E`((2e)^(2)xx B^(2)xx R^(2))/(2 xx 4m_p)=(e^(2)B^(2)R^(2))/((2m_p))=E` thus they acquire the same K.E.

A cyclotron is used to accelerate protons, deuterons, alpha -particles, etc. If the energy attained, after acceleration, by the protons is E, the energy attained by alpha -particles shall be

What are the factors on which the maximum kinetic energy acquired by a charged particles in the cyclotron depends?

A cyclotron is used to accelerate charged particles. Then the time period under the influence of 1T magnetic field of a proton :-

A proton, a deutron and alpha -particle, whose kinetic energies are same, enter perpendicularly a uniform magnetic field. Compare the radii of their circualr paths.

The cyclotron is a device which is used to accelerate charged particles such as protons, deutrons, alpha particles, etc. to very high energy. The principle on which a cyclotron works is based on the fact that an electric field can accelerate a charged particle and a magnetic field can throw it into a circular orbit. A particle of charge +q experiences a force qE in an electric field E and this force is independent of velocity of the particle. The particle is accelerated in the direction of the magnetic field. On the other hand, a magnetic field at right angles to the direction of motion of the particle throws the particle in a circular orbit in which the particle revolves with a frequency that does not depend on its speed. A modest potential difference is used as a sources of electric field. If a charged particle is made to pass through this potential difference a number of times, it will acquire an enormous by large velocity and hence kinetic energy. Which of the following cannot be accelerated in a cyclotron?
