Show that energy equivalent of one atomic mass unit is nearly `933MeV`.
Take `1a m u=1.66xx10^(-27)kg`

A

`1.6 xx10^(-19) J`

B

`9.31 MeV`

C

`6.02xx10^23 J`

D

`931 MeV`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

One atomic mass unit `=1.66xx10^(-27) kg`
Using Einstein's mass energy relation , `E = mc^2` we get
`E=1.66xx10^(-27) xx (3xx10^8)^2 = 1.49xx10^(-10) J`
But `1 MeV = 1.6xx10^(-19) xx 10^6 = 1.6 xx10^(-13) J`
`therefore F = (1.49xx10^(-10))/(1.6xx10^(-13)) = 931 MeV`
`therefore 1a.m.u = 931 MeV`
