The number of beta particles emitter by ...

The number of beta particles emitter by radioactive sustance is twice the number of alpha particles emitter by it. The resulting daughter is an

A

isotope of the parent nucleus

B

isotone of the parent nucleus

C

isomers of the parent nucleus

D

isobar of the parent nucleus

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

The radioactive substance is represented by `""_ZX^A` (parent nucleus ). Let the number of `alpha " and " beta` particles emitted by it be n and 2n respectively.
Then the transition is represented by
`""_ZX^A overset(nalpha) (to) ""_(Z-2n)Y_1^(A-4n) overset(2nbeta)(to) ""_(Z-2n+2n)Y_2^(A-4n) " or " ""_ZY_2^(A-4n)`
Thus the atomic numbers of the parent nucleus X and the resulting daughter nucleus (`Y_2`) are Z and Z respectively. Thus X and `Y_2` , are isotopes as they have same Z but different values of A.
