The work done in an open vessel at 300 K, when 224 g iron reacts with dil. HCl is (Fe = 56)

A

1.2 k cal

B

2.4 k cal

C

2.4 cal

D

1.2 cal

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Iron reacts with HCl to from ferrous chaloride and hydrogen `Fe +2HCl rarr FeCl_2+ H_2`
mole `Fe = 224/56 = 4 i.e ` 4 mole of Fe.
Hence during the reaction iron react with HCl and liberater 4 metres 4 mole of `H_2 ` gas.
`therefore` Work done `=P(V_2-V_1), V_2 = V_(H_2)` and `V_1=0` (for solid and liequid)
`=P.V_(H2)= P.(nRT)/(P) = nRT`
`=4 xx 2 xx 300 =2.4 kcal `
