A gas sample is compressed to pressure of 5 atomispheres in order to show a decrease in volume from 6 litre to 4 litres .The process gives out 6 cal. Of heat to surroundings. The system during the operatoin is

A

`-24.8`

B

`248`

C

`-248`

D

`24.8`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

` Delta V = 4-6 =- 2` litre , P =5 atm..
`therefore W =- P xx Delta V =-5 xx (-2) =10 ` litre atm
But 1 Lit atm = 24.2 cal
`W = 10 xx 242 cal `
`Delta U = q+W = 6 + 242 = 248` cal
