The most electropositive alkali metals `(Li, Na, K,etc.)` occupy the peaks on the curve and can be considered to from a group by themselves.
The less strongly electropositive alkaline earth metals `(Be, Mg, Ca, etc.)` occupy the descneding positions on the curve. The most electronegative elements, i.e., halogens `(F, CI, Br, etc.)` occupy the ascending protions on the curve. The elements in the troughs (noble metals ) are characreristically more inert.
