Solid `CO_(2)` is proved as white snow by

A

expanding the gas at high temperature

B

cooling the gas below Boyel's temperature

C

expanding (adiabatically) the compressed gas from the cylinder

D

cooling the gas below its inversion temperature

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

`CO_(2)` is usually conveyed in tank cars and cylinders in the liquid form. When the pressure is released, some of the liquid `CO_(2)` vaporizes. Adiabatic expansion causes cooling. The heat absorbed in the expansion process (overcoming the dispersion forces between molecules) is enough to cool the remaining liquid below its sublimation point `-78^(@)C` at atmospheric pressure. By inverting the cylinder and opening the valve, solid `CO_(2)` (dry ice) can be collected in a gauze bag or in a `CO_(2)` "patty maker" at room temperature.

A colourless solid (X) on heating evolved CO_(2) and also gave a white residue , soluble in water. Residue also gave CO_(2) when treated with silute acid. (X) is

At room temperature, CO_(2) is a gas while SiO_(2) is a solid because

SiO_(2) is solid while CO_(2) is gas. Why?

On heating, (NH_(3))_(2)Cr_(2)O_(7) gives rise to a gas which on treatment with Mg ribbon gives a white solid. On dissolving white solid in water another gas (X) is evolved. It gives white fumes when a rod dipped in conc. HCl is brought in its contact. Identify the gas X.

A mixture of Xe and F_(2) was heated and the white solid so formed reacted with H_(2) to give 81 mL of Xe at STP and HF . The HF formed required 68.43 mL of 0.3172 M NaOH for complete neutralisation. Determine empiriacal formula of white solid.
