The electrophile in the sulphonation of arenes is

A

`SO_(3)`

B

`overset(+)(S)O_(3)`

The correct Answer is:
1

The electrophile is sulphur trioxide `(SO_(3))` generated in the following manner.
(i) From sulphuric acid.
`2H_(2)SO_(4)toH_(3)O^(+)+HSO_(4)^(-)+SO_(3)`
(ii) From pyrosulphuric acid, often called fuming sulphuric acid:
`H_(2)S_(2)O_(7) or HOSO_(2)OSO_(2)OHtoH^(+)+HSO_(4)^(-)+SO_(3)`
In both the cases `HOSO_(2)O^(-)` acts as a base in the second step.

Benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons, though contain pi -bonds, yet they behave as saturated hydrocarbons. They are stable because of delocalisation of cloud. These undergo electrophilic substitution reactions as : C_(6)H_(5)-H + YZ to C_(6)H_(5)Y +HZ The reactivity of aromatic hydrocarbons towards electrophilic substitution depends upon the electron density in the benzene ring The electrophile in sulphonation of benzene is
