Both lattice enthalpy and hydration enthalpy decrease on moving down the group due to increase in the size of the cation but the lattice enthalpy decreases more rapidly than the hydration enthalpy and, hence, the solubility of group 2 hydroxides in water increases on moving down the group
However, group 2 hydroxides are less soluble in water as compared to the alkali metal hydroxides. `Mg(OH)_(2)` is weakly basic and is used to treat acid indigestion. the other hydroxides are strong bease. `Ca(OH)_(2)` is called slaked time.
