On account of the higher charge density of `M^(2+)` ions and the participation of 2 valence electrons in metallic bonding, alkaline earth metals have relatively strong metallic bonds. Consequently, the melting and boiling points of these metals are higher than those of alkali metals. For the same reason, group 2 metasls are harder than alkali metals.
