Which of the following statements is incorrect?

A

We can best regard the galvanic cell as a combincation of two half-cells.

B

A galvanic cell has an external source of current but the electrolytic cell does not.

C

The galvanic cell has a porous barrier unlike the elec-trolutic cell

D

The reactions that takes place in the galvanic cell is pre-cisely the spontaneous reaction that takes place when the components of the cell are mixed in a beaker.

The correct Answer is:
B

In an electrolytic cell, the electrons come from an external source. In a galvanic cell, the electrons originate in the reacting chemical system. The current is created by the clectron transfer of a redox reaction within the cell.
Each half-cell in a galvanic cell consists of an electode in contect with a solution. A half-reaction occurs in each half-cell. Such a half-reaction in often called electrode process, which gives a different meaning to the term electrode process, which gives a different meaning to the term elctrodde. Instead of referring onlu to the bar of solid attached to an external electrocal connection, electrode in a galvanic call often refers to an entire half cell.
The poprous barrier in a galvanic cell hinders the solutions in the anode and cathode compartments form mixing but allows ion flow between the two solutions.
(4) The difference is that in a beaker the electron transfer does not take place through a wire.
