Adsorption is accompanied by the evolution of heat. Thus, according to Le Chatelier's principle the amount of surface adsoebed should
(i) decrease with increase in temperature
(ii) decrease with decrease in temperature
(iii) increase with increase in temperature
(iv) increase with decrease in temperature

A

`(ii),(iii)`

B

`(i),(iii)`

C

`(i),(iv)`

D

`(ii),(iv)`

The correct Answer is:
C

According to Le Chatelier's principle. Whenever an equilibrium system is heated (or cooled), the equilibrium shifts in that direction which tends to absorb (or reease) energy. Since the adsorption process is exothermic which desorption process is endothermic, the adsorption (particularly physical) occurs readily at low temperature and decreases with increasesing tempareture.
