Which of the following statement is incorrect about polymers?

A

Polymers are substances made of recurring structual units, each of which can be regarded as derived from a specific compound called a monomer.

B

Polymers consist of macromolecules and a sample of a given polymer very ofter is a mixture of macromoleculs with whereas with different molecular masses.

C

Polymers made from a single monomeric species are called homopolymers whereas those made up of two or more different monomeric species are called copolymers.

D

Polymers do not occur in nature.

The correct Answer is:
D

The development of polymer chemistry began in 1920s. Chemicals were making great progress in classifying the chemical structures of vairous substances, but they were greatl puzzled by the behaviour of certain materials including wood, gelatine, cotton and rubber, For example when rubber, with the known empirical fromula of `C_(5) H_(8)`, was dissolved in an organic solvent, the solution displaced several unusual properties such as high visosity, low osmatic prssure, and negligible depression in the freezing point .
These observation strongly suggested the presence of very high molar mass solute, but chemists were not ready at that time to accept the idea that such giant molecules could consist of aggregates of small molecular units like `C_(5) H_(8)` pr `C_(10 H_(16)` held together by intermolecularforces.
This misconception persisted for a number of years, until HermannStaudingerclearly showed that these so- calledaggregates in facts, enormously large molecules calledmaceomolecules), each of which contains many thousand of atom held together by covalent bonds. once the structures of these macromolucules were understood, the way was open for manufacturing polymers, which now pervade almost every aspect of our daily lives. About 90% of today's chemicals, including biochemists, wor with polymers.
Polymers range from familiar synthetic plastic such as polystyrene to natural biopolymers such as `DNA` and proteins that are fundamental to biological structure and function. Polymerization of many small molecules know as monomers. Their consequently large molecular mass relative to small molecule compounds produces unique physical properties, including toughness, and a tendency to form glasses and semicrysalline structure rather than crystals.
