Two particles `A` and `B` are moving in the `x-y` plane such that their velocity components are `v_(x) = 1 m//s, v_(y) = (1)/(sqrt(3)) m//s` (for `A`) and `v_(x) = 2m//s, v_(y) = 2 m//s` (for `B`). If both the particles start moving from the same point, what is the angle between their paths ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`tan alpha = (1)/(1//sqrt(3)) = sqrt(3) rArr alpha = 60^(@)`
`tan beta = (2)/(2) = 1 rArr beta = 45^(@)`
Particles are moving in straight lines, hence the angle between their paths `= alpha - beta = 60^(@) - 45^(@) = 15^(@)`.

Two billiard balls are rolling on a flat table. One has the velocity components v_(x) = 1 ms^(-1), v_(y) = sqrt(3)ms^(-1) and the other has components v'_(x) = 2ms^(-1) and v'_(y) = 2ms^(-1) . If both the balls start moving from the same point, what is the angle between their paths ?

Two identical balls P and Q moving in the x-y plane collide at the origin (x=0,y=0) of the coordinate system. Their velocity components just before the moment of impact were, for ball P, v_(x)=6m//s, v_(y)=0,p for ball Q, v_(x)=-5m//s,v_(y)=2 m//s As a result of the collision, the ball P comes to rest. The velocity components of the ball Q just after collision will be:
