When a polar bear jumps on an iceberg, its weight 240 kg.wt is just sufficient to sink the iceberg. What is the mass of the iceberg? (specific gravity of ice is 0.9 and that of sea water is 1.02)

If M is the mass of iceberg in kg
its volume `V=(M)/(0.9xx10^(3))m^(3)`
`(because` density `rho=` specific gravity `xx10^(3)kg//m^(3))`
The weight of displaced sea water `=(Vxx1.02xx10^(3)kg)N`. Then
`Mg+240g=((M)/(0.9xx10^(3)))xx(1.02xx10^(3))xxg`
`:. 240=M((1.02)/(0.9)-1)=(12)/(90)M`
or `M=(90)/(12)xx240=1800kg`
