Surface tension arises from the cohesive...

Surface tension arises from the cohesive force between the surface molecules. Interplay between cohesion and adhesion force make the surface inclined at acute or obtuse angle with the contacting solid surfaces. This causes a capillary rise (or fail) given as `h=(2Tcostheta)/(rhogr)`, where `theta=` angle of contact `T=` surface tension `rho=` density of the liquid, `g=` acceleration due to gravity and `r=` radius of the capillary tube.
Q. In capillary action `theta` can be:

A

`0^(@)`

B

`90^(@)`

C

`90^(@)ltthetalt180^(@)`

D

all of these

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Given as : h=(2 S cos theta)/(r rhog) where S is the surface tension of liquid, r is the radius of capillary tube. rho is the density and g is acceleration due to gravity then dimensional formula for S is:

Due to capillary action, a liquid will rise in the capillary tube if the angle of contact is

If the cohesive force is greater than the adhesive force , the liquid surface will be

Statement I: More is the cohesive force, more is the surface tension. Statement II: More cohesive force leads to more shrinking of liquid surface.

The liquid in the capillary tube will rise if the angle of contact is

Check the correctness of the relation h =(2 sigma cos theta)/(r^2 dg), where h is height , sigam is surface tension, theta is angle of contact, r is radius, d is density and g in acceleration due to gravity.
