Consider the spectral line resulting from the transition from n=2 to n=1, in atoms and ions given below. The shortest wavelength is produced by

A

hydrogen atom

B

deuterium atom

C

singly ionized helium

D

doubly ionized lithium

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

As wavelength radiated during transition is given by
`(hc)/(lamda)=E_(2)-E_(1)=DeltaE and DeltaE prop(Z^(2))/(n^(2))`
So, for lithium atom Z will be higher and therefore it produced shortest wavelength.
