The ratio of minimum wavelengths of Lyma...

The ratio of minimum wavelengths of Lyman and Balmer series will be

A

1.25

B

0.25

C

5

D

10

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

The series end Lyman series corresponds to transition from `n_(i)=oo` to `n_(f)=1`, corresponding to the
`(1)/((lamda_("min"))_(L))=R[(1)/(1)-(1)/(oo)]=R implies (lamda_("min"))_(L)=(1)/(R)=912` Å . . . (i)
For last line of Balmer series,
`(1)/((lamda_("min"))_(B))=R[(1)/((2)^(2))-(1)/((oo)^(2))]=(R)/(4)`
`implies (lamda_("min"))_(B)=(4)/(R)=3636` Å . . . (ii)
Dividing Eq. (i) by Eq. (ii), we get
`((lamda_("min"))_(L))/((lamda_("min"))_(B))=0.25`
