A current of `1 A` is passed through a dilute solution of sulphuric acid for some time to liberate `1 g` of oxygen. How much hydrogen is liberated during this period? How long was the current passed? Faraday constant `= 96500 C mol^(-1)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic mass of oxygen = `16`, valency = 2
Equivalent wt. of oxygen = `16//2 = 8g`
Equivalent wt. of hydrogen = 1g
`(m_(O_2))/(m_(H_2)) = (E_(O_2))/(E_2) = 8/1`
`m_(H_2) = (m_(O_2))/(8) = 1/8 = 0.125g`
1g of oxygen =`1/8` g-equivalent
`-= 1/8` faraday= `Q`
`t = Q/i = (1/8xx96500)/(1) = 1.2xx10^(4)sec` ltbr gt`=3hr 20 min`.
