When phenol is dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid and a few drops of aqueous sodium nitrite added, a deep blue-green colour appears. On pouring the product into water, the solution becomes red. The solution turns blue again when excess of alkali (aqueous sodium hydroxude) is added due to the formation of sodium salt of indophenol.
