Explanation

(1) By homogeneous we mean that its compositions and properties are uniform throughout the mixture.
(2) All gas mixtures are solutions (i.e., homogeneous mixtures) because all gases and vapors mix homogeneously. Such solutions are formed spontaneously and quickly because of fast translatory motion of molecules in gases. Air is an example of this type of solution.
(3) Liquid solutions may be obtained as a (i) mixture of two substance which are themselves liquid e.g. `H_(2)O and C_(2)H_(5)OH` or may result from (ii) addition of a solid or a gas to a liquid, and (iii) some solid subsyances can form liquid solutions on mixing.
Unlike gases, all liquids do not form solutions on mixing. Liquid pairs can be miscible (completely dissolve in each other in all proportions when shaken togather e.g. `C_(2)H_(5)OH` and water, gasoline and Kerosene), partially miscible (show a limited solubility in each other e.g ether and water), and immiscible (mutually insoluble e.g. oil and water).
If a substance is very slightly soluble, say less than a 0.1 g of solute in 1000 g. of solvent, the chemist may call it insoluble. Probably nothing is insoluble in a given solvent but many things are practically insoluble (e.g. glass in water).
