The van't Hoff factor `i` for a compound which undergoes dissociation in one solvent and association in other solvent is respectively.

A

greater than one greater than one

B

less than one and greater than one

C

less than one and less than one

D

greater than one and less than one

The correct Answer is:
4

Van't hoff factor (i) is defined as:
`i=("observed colligative property")/("calculate colligative property")`
In case of dissociation, total number of moles of particles after dissociation is more than total number of moles of particles before dissociation. Thus, values of `i` are greater than one (unity). On the other habd, in case of association, total number of moles of particles after association is less than total number of moles of particles before association. Thus, in case of assocition, values of `i` are less than unity.
