In hot solution `(80^(@))`, the sodium hypochlorite disproportionates rapidly according to the following equation

A

`OCl^(-)rarrCl^(2)+Cl^(-)`

B

`OCl^(-)rarrCl^(-)+ClO_(3)^(-)`

C

`OCl^(-)rarrCl^(-)+CiO_(2)^(-)`

D

`OCl^(-)rarrCl^(-)+ClO_(4)^(-)`

The correct Answer is:
2

Dissolving the halgons in `NaOH` can in principle be used to make all the hypohalite ions:
`X_(2)+2NaOHrarrNaX+NaOX+H_(2)O`
However hypohalite ions tend to disporpotionate particularly in basic solutions. The rate of the dispropotionation reaction increase with temperature.
Thus when `CI_(2)` dissolves in `NaOH` at or below room temperature a reasonably pure solution of `NaOCI` and `NaCI` is obtained .However in hot solution `(80^(@)C)` the sodium hypochloric disproportions rapidly and a good yield of sodium chlorate is obtained.
`3Ooverset(+1)(CI^(-))rarr 2overset(-1)(C)I^(-)+overset(+5)(C)IO_(3)^(-)`
