Water drops fall at regular intervals fr...

Water drops fall at regular intervals from a tap 5 m above the ground. The third drop is leaving the tap, the instant the first drop touches the ground. How far above the ground is the second drop at that instant. `(g = 10 ms^-2)`

A

2.50 m

B

3.75 m

C

4.00 m

D

1.25 m

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

Let the regular interval is t. When the third drop is about to fall, the first drop strikes the ground. First drop has fallen for time: `2t`
`2^(nd)` drop has fallen for time: t
`1^(st) drop: 5=1/2g(2t)^(2)`
`implies1/2g t^(2)=5/4`
`2^(nd)` drop: `h=1/2g t^(2)=1.25 m`
the distance of the second drop above the ground is
`5-1.25=3.75 m`.
