What is set?

In Mathematics, a set happens to be a well-defined collection of distinct objects. Here, the word, “well defined” has been referred to a specific property. It helps in getting the actual information as to whether a given object belongs to the set or not.  At the same time, the word, “distinct” implies that the objects of a set are different. The objects that are present in a set are called elements of the set. In a class of students, each student happens to be an element of the class or set of students.  If it becomes possible to list the elements of a set, then we can write down the list with the use of a pair of chain brackets. Here, each element is separated from the next with the use of a comma.

For example, if A= the set of whole numbers which happens to be greater than 4 and less than 10, then A= {5, 6, 7, 8, 9} Here, we can clearly say that each of the elements is greater than 4 but less than 1.

For example:
1. The collection of children in class VIII whose weight exceeds 30 kg represents a set.
