An association between roots of higher plants and fungus is called mycorrhiza.The association is mutually beneficial for both of them.Fungus gets shelter and food from plant.It obtains its nourishment from cortical cells of roots.Fungal hyphae are spread in the soil over a large area.They take part in absorption of water, dissolving essential minerals in organic debris and providing it to the plant, absorption of inorganic salts from soil and in some cases, secreting growth promoting substances.Example is roots of Pinus.
