Which one of the following does not form sodium bisulphite addition product with sodium bisulphite solution

A

`CH_(3)OH`

B

`C_(6)H_(5)COCH_(3)`

C

`C_(6)H_(5)CHO`

D

`CH_(3)CHO`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Crystalline solid derivatives are formed when aldehydes or ketones are shaken with saturated aqueous solution of sodium bisulphite, but sodium bisulphite is a bigger nucleophile so, all ketones do not give this test. Only aliphaic methyl ketones form addition product with sodium bisulphite.
