(A) Lower aldehydes and ketones are soluble in water but solubility decrease as the molecular masses increase.
(R) Distinction between aldehydes and ketones can be made by Tollen's reagent.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion

B

If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion

C

If assertion is true but reason is false

D

If the assertion and reason both are false

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

It is true that lower aldehyde and ketones are soluble in water but as the molecular mass increases their solubility decreases. On adding Tollen's reagent to a solution of Carbonyl compound if silver mirror is obtained than it is aldehyde. Therefore Tollen's reagent is used for the identification of aldehydes and ketones. Here, assertion and reason both are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
