Calculate the number of moles of methanol in 5 litres of its 2 m solution if the density of solution is 0.981 kg`L^(-1)` (Molar mass of methanol=32.0g `mol^(-1)`.

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
9.22 moles

2 m solution of methanol means 2 moles of of methanol in 1000 g of the solvent (water).
2 moles of `CH_(3)OH=2xx32 g=64g`
`therefore" Mass of solution "=1000+64 = 1064 g = 1.064 g" "therefore" Volume of solution "=(1.064)/(0.981)=1.085L`
Thus, 1.085 L of the solution contain `CH_(3)OH ` = 2 moles
`therefore " 5 L of the solution will contain " CH_(3)OH=(2)/(1.085)xx5="9.22 moles"`
