What is the role of cryolite in the metallurgy of aluminium?

The role of cryolite in the metallurgy of aluminium is two - fold :
(i) Fused alumina `(Al_2 O_ 3 ) ` is a bad conductor of electricity but the addition of cryolite ` (NaAlF_ 6 )` makes it good conductor. As a result, aluminium can be obtained by electrolysis.
(ii) The melting point of pure alumina is very high (2323 K ) but the addition of cryolite lowers the melting point the mixture to around 1140 K. As a result, electrolysis is carried out at a much lower temperature (1173 K ) which saves lot of electricity.
