Why HF acid is stored in wax coated glass bottle ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This is because HF does not attack wax but reacts with glass. It dissolves `SiO_(2)` present in glass forming hydrofluorosilicic acid
`SiO_(2) + 6HF rarr H_(2)SiF_(6) + 2 H_(2)O`

Why is hydrogen peroxide stored in wax lined bottles?

Hydrogen peroxide is not stored in glass bottle as

Statement-1 : H_(2)O_(2) is stored in wax-lined glass. Statement-2 : Presence of traces of alkali metal ions in the glass catalyse the decomposition of H_(2)O_(2) .

Explain the following with proper reason: (i) Anhydrous HCl is a bad conductor of electricity while aqueous HCl is a good conductor. (ii) HF is not stored in glass bottles but kept in wax lined bottles. (iii) HF has a greater electronegativity difference and more ionic character than HCI, HBr and Hl but it the weakest acid.
