Arrange HClO, HBrO, HIO decreasing order of acidic strength.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the electronegativity of the halogen decreases, the electron density in the O-H bond increases. As a result, cleavage of O-H bond to liberate `H^(+)` ions becomes little difficult and hence the acidic character decreases, i.e., `H - O - Cl gt H - O - Br gt H - O - I`
