How are interhalogen compounds formed? What general compositions can be assigned to them?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Halogens react with each other to form a number of compounds called interhalogen compounds. Their general formula is `XX_(n)` where X is a less electronegative halogen while X' is a more electronegative halogen and n is its number.
Depending upon the oxiation state of halogen X (i.e., +1, +3, +5 and +7), these are divided into four types : XX', `XX'_(3), XX'_(5) and XX'_(7)`.
