XeF(2) has a straight linear structure a...

`XeF_(2)` has a straight linear structure and not a bent angular structure. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the formation of `XeF_(2)` molecule, Xe undergoes `sp^(3)` d-hybridization. Two of the five `sp^(3)`d-orbitals overlap

with one p-orbital of each of the two F-atoms to form two Xe-F bonds while the remaining three contain Ione pair of electrons. To reduce bond-pair-Ione pair repulsions, X-F bonds occupy axial positions while the three lone pairs occypy equatorial positions. As a result, `XeF_(2)` molecule has linear but not bent structure.
