What happens when PCl(5) is heated ?...

What happens when `PCl_(5)` is heated ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`PCl_(5)` has three equatorial (202 pm) and two axial (240 pm) bonds. Since asial bonds are weaker (repelled by three bond pairs) than equatorial bonds (repelled only by two bond pairs), therefore, when `PCl_(5)` is heated, the less stable axial bonds break to form `PCL_(3)`.
`PCl_(5) overset("Heat")rarr PCl_(3)+Cl_(2)`.
