How are XeO(3) and XeOF(4) prepared ?...

How are `XeO_(3)` and `XeOF_(4)` prepared ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrolysis of `XeF_(4) and XeF_(6)` with water gives `XeO_(3)`
`6 XeF_(4) + 12 H_(2) O rarr 4 Xe + 2 XeO_(3) + 24 HF + 3 O_(2)," "XeF_(6) + 3H_(2)O rarr XeO_(3) + 6HF`
On the other hand, partial hydrolysis of `XeF_(6)` gives `XeOF_(4)`.
`XeF_(6) + H_(2)O rarr XeOF_(4) + 2HF`

The number of P pi- d pi 'Pi' bonds present in XeO_(3) and XeO_(4) molecules respectively

If the central atom is of third row or below this in the periodic table, then lone pair will occupy a stereochemically inactive s-orbital and bonding will be through almost pure p-orbitals and bond angles are nearly 90^(@) , if the substituent's electronegativity value is le 2.5 . The hybridisation of atomic orbitals of central atom "Xe" in XeO_(4), XeO_(2)F_(2) and XeOF_(4) respectively.

How is XeO_(3) prepared from XeF_(6) ? Write the chemical equation for the reaction.

(a) Write the balanced chemical equations for obtaining XeO_(3) " and " XeOF_(4) "from "XeF_(6). (b) Account for the followingk : (i) H_(2)S is less acidic then H_(2) Te. (ii) H_(3)PO_(2) has reducing nature. (iii) SO_(2) is an air pollutant.

Assertion (A): Sodium perxenate (Na_(4)XeO_(6)) reacts with NaF in acidic medium to give XeO_(3) and F_(2) Reason (R ): XeO_(6)^(4-) is a stronger oxidant than F_(2) .
