Out of `H_(2)O " and " H_(2)S`, which one has higher bond angle and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oxygen is more electronegative than sulphuur, therefore, bond pair electrons of the O-H bond will be closer to oxygen than the bond pair electrons of S-H bond which will be little away from the sulphur atom. As a result, bond pair-bond pair repulsions would be stronger in O-H bonds than in the S-H bonds. Consequently, bond angle in `H_(2)O (104.5^(@))` is higher than in `H_(2)S(92.1^(@))`
