Since oxidation state of N in `HNO_(2)`. + 3, therefore, it can be increased to its maximum O.N. of +5 and hence it acts as a reducing it. For example, it reduces `KMnO_(4)` to manganese salts.
`2 KMnO_(4) + 5 HNO_(2) + 3 H_(2)SO_(4) rarr K_(2)SO_(4) + 2 MnSO_(4) + 5HNO_(3) + 3H_(2)O`
