Predict the relative acidic strength among the following:
`H_(2)O`, `H_(2)S`, `H_(2)Se`, `H_(2)Te`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the electronegativity of the central atom decreases, the bond pairs of electrons tend to lie away and away from the central atom as we move from `H_(2)O` to `H_(2)Te`. In other words, the force of repulsion between the adjacent bond pairs is maximum in `H_(2)O` and minimum in `H_(2)Te`. Thus, `H_(2)O` has the largest bond angle `(104.5^(@))`.
