[Fe(H2O)6]^(3+) is strongly paramagnetic...

`[Fe(H_2O)_6]^(3+)` is strongly paramagnetic whereas `[Fe(CN)_6]^(3-)` is weakly paramagnetic. Explain.

Text Solution

In both the complexes, Fe is in +3 oxidation state with the configuration `3d^(5)`. `CN^(-)` is a strong ligand. In its presence, 3d electrons pair up leaving only one unpaired electron. The hybridisation is `d^(2)sp^(3)` forming inner orbital complex. `H_(2)O` is a weak ligand. In its presence, 3d electrons do not pair up. The hybridisation is `sp^(3)d^(2)` forming an outer orbital complex containing five unpaired electrons. Hence, it is strongly paramagnetic.

[Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-) is diamagnetic while [Cr(NH_(3))_(6)]^(3+) is paramagnetic. Explain.

[Cr(NH_3)_6]^(3+) is paramagnetic while [Ni(CN)_4]^(2-) is diamagnetic. Explain why?

[Ti(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) is paramagnetic in nature due to

Account for the fact that [Fe(CN)_6]^(3-) is weakly paramagnetic while [Fe(CN)_6]^(2+) is diamagnetic.

Explain the following giving reasons (a) [NiCI_(4)]^(2-) is tetrahedral and paramagnetic whereas [Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-) is square plannar and dimagnetic (b) [Fe(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) ion is more paramagnetic than [Fe(CN)_(6)]^(3-) ion (c ) Ni(CO)_(4) is tetrahedral while [Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-) ion is square planar (d) [Co(F_(6))]^(3-) is a high spin complex whereas [Co(CN)_(6)]^(3-) ion is a low spin complex .

The questions given below consist of Assertion (A) and Reason (R ) . Use the following key to select the correct answer. [FeF_6]^(4-) is a paramagnetic complex while [Fe(CN)_6^(4-)] is a diamagnetic complex . Reason : [FeF_6]^(4-) is an outer orbital complex whereas [Fe(CN)_6]^(4-) is an inner orbital complex .
