Due to depletion of ozone layer, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs or freons-12) are being phased out as refrigerants, and propellants? Suggest some substitutes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Substitutes for chlorofluorocarbons or freon-12 are are hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) such as `CHClF_(2)` (also called freon-22) and `CHCl_(2)F` and hydroluorocarbons (HFCs) such as `FCH_(2)CH_(2)F` (HFC-152). Due to rpesence of C-H bonds, both these types of compounds are generally destroyed at lower altitudes beore they reach the stratosphere.
