Write down the structure of the product ...

Write down the structure of the product of the following reactions:
(i) 3-Methyl-1-butene`overset("HBr")to`?
.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Addition of `H^(+)` of 3-methyl-1-butene first gives `2^(@)` carbocation(I) which being less stable rearranges to the more stable `3^(@)` carbocation (II). Nucleophile attack by `Br^(-)` ion on this carbocation gives 2-bromo-2-methylbutane as the major product,

(ii) Electrophilic addition reaction occurs. in the first step, `H^(+)` adds to that carbon atom of the double bond which carries the `CH_(3)` group since it produces carbocation (I) which is stabilized by +R-effect of the Ph group and +I-effect of the `CH_(2)CH_(3)` group. subsequent nucleophilic attack by `Br^(-)` on carbocation (I) gives 1-bromo-1-phenylpropane (II) as the final product.

(iii) In presence of peroxides, addition of HBr to alkenes occurs anti to Markovnikov's rule. thus, ltBrgt .
