Arrange the following halides in order increasing `S_(N^(2))` reactivity `CH_(3)Cl,CH_(3)Br,CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl,(CH_(3))_(2)CHCl`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the size of the alkyl group increases, `S_(N)2` reactivity decreases. Further, C-Br bond being weaker is easier to break than C-Cl bond. Therefore, the overall increasing `S_(N)2` reactivity follows the order:
`(CH_(3))_(2)CHCl lt CH_(3)CH_(2) Cl lt CH_(3)Cl lt CH_(3)Br`.
