Which of the compounds will react faster in `S_(N)1` reaction with `""^(-)OH` ion?
`CH_(3)-CH_(2)-ClorC_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)-Cl`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`S_(N)1` reactions occur through carbocation intermediates. `C_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)Cl` readily undergoes ionization to give `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)^(+)` which is stabilized by resonance.

In constant, `CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl` does not undergo ionization to give `CH_(3)CH_(2)^(+)`. As a result, `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)Cl` reacts faster than `CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl` with `OH^(-)` ion.
