If a patient consumes methanol by mistake, then how to treat methanol poisoning?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A 10% ethanol solution administered intravenously is a safe and effective antidote for severe methanol poisoning. Both methanol and ethanol are oxidised in the body first to methanal and ethanal and then to methanoic acid and ethanoic acid respectively. It is the methanoic acid which causes blindness and death. Therefore, to slow down the oxidation of methanal to methanoic acid, ethanol is administered. Ethanol gets preferentially oxidised thereby allowing time for kidneys to excrete methanal. In this way methanol poisoning a treated.
