In presence of conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`, isobutyl alcohol (I) first gives a `1^(@)` first gives `1^(@)` carbocation (II) which then rearranges to the more stable `3^(@)` carbocation (III) by 1,2-hydride shift. Carbocation (III), then reacts with benzene to form tert-butylbenzene.
