Give two reactions that show the acidic nature of phenol. Compare the acidity of phenol with that of ethanol.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reaction showing acidic nature of phenol are:
(i) Reaction with sodium. Phenol reacts with active metals like sodium to liberate `H_(2)` gas.

(ii) Reaction with NaOH. Phenol dissolves in NaOH to form sod. phenoxide and water.

Comparison of acidic character of phenol and ethanol. phenol is more acidic than ethanol. this is due to the reason that phenoxide ion left after the loss of a proton from phenol is stabilized by resonance while ethoxide ion is not.
