What is the order of acidic character of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The `1^(@),2^(@) and 3^(@)` alcohols have one, two and three alkyl groups on the carbon atom attached to the OH group as shown below:

Since alkyl groups have +I-effect, therefore, electron density in O-H bond increases from `1^(@)` to `3^(@)` alcohols. In other words, the O-H bond in `3^(@)` alcohols is the strongest and hence most difficitul to break followed by O-H bond in `2^(@)` alcohols while the O-H bond in `1^(@)` alcohols is the weakest and hence most easy to break. thus, the acid strength of alcohols follows the order:
primarygtsecondarygttertiary.
